Pineapples and its world’s largest exporter

Time and again, the archipelagic Indonesia makes an amazing achievement in the field of agriculture: pineapple.

Pineapple is an agricultural product that contribute to the Indonesia’s state revenues with a value of more than 130 million US dollars per year. With these amounts, the country has become the world’s largest pineapples producer, outnumbers Thailand and the Philippines.

Most of Indonesia’s pineapples are shipped to the US, then to other countries in Europe and Asia as well as in Latin America. The produces are favoured by foreign consumers due to their excellent quality.

Nonetheless, beside exporting natural pineapples, some Indonesian companies are also exporting processed ones (cocktail) in the cans. In other words, the produces are exported with the added value.

The Indonesia’s PT. Great Giant Pineapple in Lampung is the third-largest cocktail exporting company in the world. In the near future, the company will expand its business in other regions such as Kalimantan for the purpose of increasing production. It needs to be done because of the high demand from international market.

The Indonesian government through the state-owned PT Perkebunan Nusantara has already begun to invest in pineapple plantation commodities. Private companies too are interested in investing in this business. These growing interests are undoubtedly due to the notable achievement of Indonesia as the pineapples exporter with significant value.

Pineapple international markets since 1999 have increased due to public awareness on the high nutritional value of pineapple. Since 2000, it has increased for more than 20 percent per year, whereas previously was only at 10 percent.

In 1999 the markets were around 1 million tons. Now the demand may reach to more than 5 million tons. Before being led by Indonesia, the markets were dominated by Thailand and the Philippines. (DM)
